In plain words

Ears handle a huge range, from a pin drop to a jet engine. Counting that range in plain numbers would need enormous figures. Decibels squeeze it: every 10 decibels up means ten times more sound power. A whisper is about 30, talking about 60 and a loud concert about 110. Long exposure above about 85 can harm hearing.
