In plain words
Velocity is how fast and which way something moves. Acceleration is how quickly that velocity changes. A car pulling away from a light accelerates, and so does one braking. Turning a corner at a steady speed is acceleration too, because the direction changes. In a simulation, forces create acceleration, acceleration changes velocity, and velocity moves things.
