Lumen light guide

Every control

Every control in the panel, top to bottom. The picture itself is a control too: tap it anywhere to play a run.

Load and save

Under the tiles a line says which pictures the light mode uses. In Tyndall and Aureole, as the page opens, it reads: This light mode lights picture A only. Penumbra and Alabaster play A into B. Kept on this device, never uploaded. In Penumbra and Alabaster it says what plays: the samples until you add your own, then A plays into B. Your pictures follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture, until you press × on a tile.

Image AButton
Picture A as a tile: press it to add or replace your own; two pictures picked or dropped at once fill A and B. The × on a picture takes it away and the sample plays again. Your pictures stay on this device and follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture.
SwapButton
Exchanges A and B, so the transition plays the other way. With one picture of your own, it moves to the other side and the sample takes its place.
Image BButton
Picture B, the one A plays into, as a tile: press it to add or replace your own. The × takes it away and the sample returns. See PNG and JPEG.
Save PNGButton
Saves the frame as it is at that moment, as aikizi-lumen-light.png. See PNG.
Record videoButton
Records one run: it presses Replay itself and records the canvas for up to seven seconds. While recording it reads Stop recording; press it to stop early. See record video.
ReplayButton
Plays a run again at once, in the direction the next run would go. See replay.

Presets

God rays · Shafts · Halo · Corona · Burn through · Eclipse · Alabaster · LanternPick one
Sets the light mode and every slider at once; it does not start a run. The highlight goes as soon as you move a slider.
  • God rays: The opening look. Tyndall mode, light above the middle (X 0.5, Y 0.12), intensity 1, density 0.6, anisotropy 0.78, warmth 0.5, base dim 0.32, 2.2 seconds, ease in-out. See god rays.
  • Shafts: Tyndall mode with the light high on the right (X 0.78, Y 0.1), stronger light in thicker haze and a darker picture: intensity 1.25, density 0.78, base dim 0.42, 2.6 seconds, strong ease in-out.
  • Halo: Aureole mode, light above the middle (X 0.5, Y 0.2): a soft, streaky glow off the bright parts, intensity 1.1, density 0.45, base dim 0.22, 3 seconds. See halo and aureole.
  • Corona: Aureole mode with the light left of the middle (X 0.32, Y 0.34) and the strongest, warmest glow of the halo pair: intensity 1.4, warmth 0.7, 3.4 seconds, strong ease in-out. See corona.
  • Burn through: Penumbra mode with the light in the middle (X 0.5, Y 0.5): B opens out from the middle, intensity 1, density 0.5, warmth 0.6, 2.4 seconds. See burn through and penumbra.
  • Eclipse: Penumbra mode with the light high on the right (X 0.72, Y 0.28), so B opens from there; darker parts hold longer and the edge is warmer and brighter: intensity 1.2, density 0.8, warmth 0.75, 2.8 seconds. See eclipse.
  • Alabaster: Alabaster mode with the light above the middle (X 0.5, Y 0.22): B shows through where it is light and thin first, intensity 0.95, warmth 0.62, base dim 0.2, 2.6 seconds. See alabaster and translucency.
  • Lantern: Alabaster mode with the light low and left (X 0.4, Y 0.6), a softer edge and the warmest light of all: intensity 1.15, density 0.7, warmth 0.85, 3 seconds, strong ease in-out. See lantern.

Sliders

The sliders change the frame at once when no run is playing, and the next run in any case. Not every slider matters in every light mode; each line says where it does.

Light modeChoice
What the light does. Tyndall (god rays) darkens the picture and draws shafts from the light. Aureole (halo) spreads a short glow off the bright parts. Penumbra (burn) and Alabaster (backlit) carry picture A into picture B. See Tyndall effect, aureole, penumbra and alabaster.
Transition speedSlider · 0.3 to 4 · starts at 2.1
How fast a run plays; right is faster. A run lasts 4 seconds at the left end and 0.3 seconds at the right. The number beside it compares with the opening look's 2.2 seconds, so it reads 1.00× at the start; 2.00× is twice as fast.
Light XSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.5
Where the light sits across the frame: 0 is the left edge, 1 the right. In Tyndall and Aureole it is where the light rests between runs; in the transitions, B shows sooner near it. See light position.
Light YSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.12
Where the light sits up and down: 0 is the top edge, 1 the bottom. With both Light X and Light Y at 0.5 the light is in the middle, and a Tyndall or Aureole run has nowhere to swing.
IntensitySlider · 0 to 2 · starts at 1
How strong the light is. In Tyndall and Aureole it brightens the shafts or the halo; in the transitions it brightens the glowing edge that moves across the picture. At 0 there is no added light. See light intensity.
DensitySlider · 0.05 to 1.2 · starts at 0.6
How thick the haze is. In Tyndall and Aureole, more density gives more light and more shadow within it. In Penumbra it makes the dark parts of the picture hold out longer; in Alabaster it softens the moving edge.
AnisotropySlider · 0 to 0.9 · starts at 0.78
How much the light leans forward. In Tyndall, higher values gather the shafts brighter near the light; in Aureole, higher values pull the halo tighter along the direction of the light. The slider is hidden in Penumbra and Alabaster, which do not use it. See anisotropy.
WarmthSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.5
The colour of the light, from plain white at 0 to a warm orange at 1, like a household bulb. See light warmth and colour temperature.
Base dimSlider · 0 to 0.7 · starts at 0.32
How much the picture is darkened so the light stands out. Tyndall darkens it fully and Aureole a little over half as much. The transitions darken only while they run, most at the halfway point and not at all at the start or end. See base dim.
EasingChoice
How a run speeds up and slows down: Linear, three strengths each of ease in and ease out, two of ease in-out, expo out and back out. See easing, ease-in, ease-out, easing strength, expo out and back out.

Export

Under the buttons, a line tells you what the last export did, such as PNG saved.

Reset

Back to the God rays preset and picture A, with the next transition going from A into B. Your pictures stay.

ResetButton
Sets the light mode and every slider back to the God rays preset and returns to picture A, so the next Penumbra or Alabaster run goes from A into B. Your pictures stay as they are.
