Mosaic engine guide
Start
The tool opens with a sample picture of coloured peaks under a gold sun, already broken into triangles by the Low poly preset.
What you need
- A current browser. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all draw it.
- A picture, if you want your own. Any picture the browser can open works. Big ones are fit to 1,600 pixels on their long side, or 1,000 on a phone.
Your first result
- Open Mosaic engine. The sample is already there as a low-poly picture.
- Press Image A to open a picture, or drop one on the frame. Or keep the sample.
- Under Presets, press Stained glass, Honeycomb or any other. The picture is built again at once.
- Drag Cell count and let go. More cells keep more detail; fewer make bigger, bolder pieces.
- At the top of the panel, press Save PNG to keep it, or Copy to put it on the clipboard.
Good to know
- The PNG is named mosaic- and a number, at the picture's working size: the size shown after source in the line under the Image buttons.
- The PNG and the copy hold the flat PNG picture only. It is standard range (SDR), not HDR.
- Letting go of a slider builds the picture again with fresh random points, so the layout changes a little each time. Generate does the same on its own.
- Your picture is kept on this device, and every lab tool that takes a picture opens with it, until you press × on its tile.
- On a phone the controls sit in a bar at the bottom of the screen. Tap the bar to open them.
