Spectral transition guide

Every control

Every control in the panel, top to bottom. The picture itself is a control too: tap it anywhere to start a run.

Load and save

Under the tiles a line says what plays: the samples until you add your own, then A plays into B. Kept on this device, never uploaded. Your pictures follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture, until you press × on a tile.

Image AButton
Picture A as a tile: press it to add or replace your own; two pictures picked or dropped at once fill A and B. The × on a picture takes it away and the sample plays again. Your pictures stay on this device and follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture.
SwapButton
Exchanges A and B, so the transition plays the other way. With one picture of your own, it moves to the other side and the sample takes its place.
Image BButton
Picture B, the one A plays into, as a tile: press it to add or replace your own. The × takes it away and the sample returns. See PNG and JPEG.
Save PNGButton
Saves the frame as it is at that moment, as aikizi-spectral-transition.png. See PNG.
Record videoButton
Records one run: it presses Replay itself and records the canvas for up to seven seconds. While recording it reads Stop recording; press it to stop early. See record video.
ReplayButton
Plays a run again at once, in the direction the next run would go. See replay.

EffectChoice
Opens another of the 14 image transitions. Each one is its own page, so your pictures and settings stay behind.

Presets

Apparition · Structure first · Texture swap · X-ray cross · Spectral dissolvePick one
Sets every control at once; it does not start a run. The highlight goes as soon as you change a control.
  • Apparition: The opening look: structure first, band stagger 0.78, X-ray ghost 0.72, 6 bands, 2.6 seconds, strong ease in-out. B's shapes form well before its detail. See apparition.
  • Structure first: A clean change from broad to fine with little ghost: structure first, stagger 0.55, ghost 0.32, 6 bands, 2 seconds, ease in-out. See structure first.
  • Texture swap: Fine detail changes first while A's shapes hold: detail first, stagger 0.62, ghost 0.38, 5 bands, 1.8 seconds, ease out. See texture swap.
  • X-ray cross: The layers as far apart as they go, with the strongest ghost: structure first, stagger 1, ghost 1, 7 bands, 2.8 seconds, ease in-out. See X-ray ghost.
  • Spectral dissolve: All layers change almost together, with a faint ghost: structure first, stagger 0.18, ghost 0.22, 6 bands, 1.6 seconds, expo out. See spectral dissolve.

Sliders

These controls change the next run, and the frame on screen at once when no run is playing.

MethodChoice
How each picture is split into layers. Pyramid, the opening choice, uses blurred copies at halving sizes, a Laplacian pyramid. Fourier splits the brightness into waves with a Fourier transform and changes rings of them, slow waves to fast ones, while the colour crossfades; X-ray ghost and Bands do nothing with it. A preset or Reset sets the pyramid again. See Laplacian pyramid.
Band orderChoice
Which layers change first. Structure first sends the broad shapes across first; detail first sends the fine texture first. See structure first and detail first.
Transition speedSlider · 0.3 to 4 · starts at 1.7
How fast a run plays; right is faster. A run lasts 4 seconds at the left end and 0.3 seconds at the right. The number beside it compares with the opening look, Apparition at 2.6 seconds, so it reads 1.00× at the start; 2.00× is twice as fast.
Band staggerSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.78
How far apart the layers take their turns. At 0 they all change together, close to a plain crossfade; at 1 the first layer has finished before the last one starts. See band stagger and stagger.
X-ray ghostSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.72
How much a layer's contrast is raised while its A and B halves still disagree, so edges of both pictures glow through each other mid-change. At 0 there is no lift. Pyramid method only. See X-ray ghost and contrast.
BandsSlider · 4 to 7 · starts at 6
How many layers of detail each picture is split into, from 4 to 7, plus one last layer with the broadest shading. More layers give more separate turns. Pyramid method only. See band count and image bands.
EasingChoice
How a run speeds up and slows down: Linear, three strengths each of ease in and ease out, two of ease in-out, expo out and back out. See easing, ease-in, ease-out, easing strength and expo out.

Export

Under the buttons, a line tells you what the last export did, such as PNG saved.

Reset

Back to the Apparition preset. Your pictures stay.

ResetButton
Sets every control back to the Apparition preset. Your pictures and the direction of the next run stay as they are.
