A Midjourney sref alternative: upload the picture, not a code
Style codes are locked to one tool and cannot be read. An uploaded style reference does the same job portably, costs nothing extra, and decodes into words. One prompt run with none and with three.
The alternative to a Midjourney style reference code is the picture the code stood for. On aikizi you upload that image, badge it as a style reference, and the model is told in words to take its palette, mood and rendering and ignore its subject. No code, no marketplace, nothing to expire — and the same picture also decodes into a written prompt you can carry anywhere.
Why people go looking for an alternative
Three reasons, and only one of them is about Midjourney being worse.
- Codes are locked to one tool. A style code is a Midjourney object. It means nothing to Gemini, to Nano Banana Pro, or to anything else you might move to.
- The V8 reference story changed. As of September 2026
--crefsits in Midjourney's legacy documentation — it worked on version 6, was replaced by Omni Reference in V7, and by the Edit Model in V8.--orefis unsupported on V8.1 and V8.2. The Edit Model instead takes up to four reference images in one prompt. Style reference and style weight do still work. - A code is not readable. You cannot look at a number and know what it will do, which is why people trade lists of them.
This page will not give you a code. Style codes are paid work, and putting someone's on a free page gives it away.
The alternative, in one move
Upload the picture whose look you want and give it the Style role. That writes this above your prompt:
Reference 1 is a style reference only — take its palette, mood and rendering quality, and ignore its subject and composition.
Here is that working. One plain prompt — a clay water pot on a worn wooden shelf, a folded cloth beside it, photographic — run twice, the second time with three style references attached and nothing else changed.
The reference was a photograph of a beached fishing boat at blue hour. Its subject did not come across — there is no boat here — but its weather did: the same storm cloud, the same cold dusk, the same wet dark ground, even coils of rope that belong to a coast rather than a pottery. Ten words chose the subject; one file chose everything else. That is the job people keep a library of codes for, done with a picture you already own.
Code against uploaded reference
| A Midjourney style code | An uploaded style reference | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A number that resolves inside one tool | A file you own |
| Portable? | No | Yes — the same file works anywhere that takes references |
| Readable? | Not without generating from it | You are looking at it |
| Costs extra? | Unlocking one here is 5 credits | Nothing. A generation is 8 at 1K with or without references |
| How many at once | One style source | 3 on the $8 plan, 10 on the $20 plan, each with its own role |
| Can it be written down? | Only as the number | Decode it for 3 credits and get the palette, the style DNA and a prompt |
The step a code cannot do
Decode the reference picture for 3 credits and you get its palette with hex codes, a style DNA in four layers, seven two-word style tokens, and a generation prompt written in the order this model reads best. Now the look exists as words as well as a file — which means you can edit it, keep half of it, or send it to a tool that takes no references at all. A code cannot be half-used.
The honest part
An uploaded reference is not a drop-in replacement for the thing people actually like about codes, which is that a good one is a house style you can summon in five characters. A file is heavier to carry and you have to choose it each time. And a reference on this model carries palette, light and surface well, but not another tool's hand — we crossed a Midjourney portrait over and the line character drifted even though the palette held exactly. If your work depends on Midjourney's specific engraving feel, the alternative is a good picture of your own, not a substitute number.
FAQ
What is the alternative to a Midjourney sref code?
The picture itself. Upload it as a style reference and badge it Style, which tells the model to take the palette, mood and rendering and ignore the subject. It works in any tool that accepts reference images, and it does not expire.
Does --cref still work in Midjourney V8?
No. Character Reference is in Midjourney's legacy documentation — version 6 only, replaced by Omni Reference in V7 and by the Edit Model in V8, which takes up to four reference images in one prompt. Style reference and style weight do still work on V8.1 and V8.2, as of September 2026.
Do uploaded style references cost extra?
No. A generation is 8 credits at 1K on Nano Banana Pro whether it carries no references or ten. Unlocking a style code on a decode, by contrast, is 5 credits.
Can I turn a look into words instead of a file?
Yes — decode the reference for 3 credits and you get the palette with hex codes, a four-layer style DNA, seven style tokens and a generation prompt. That is the one thing a numeric code cannot give you.
Will an uploaded reference reproduce a Midjourney style exactly?
Not exactly. Palette, medium, subject and background cross over well; line character and the specific feel of another tool's rendering drift. Expect a cousin rather than a copy.
Take a picture whose look you want, attach it in the Studio and give it the Style badge. What crossing a Midjourney picture over actually looks like is part 5 of the generation series.
