What this is

Living Lace grows a web of molten metal between cells you plant, and fills each cell with enamel, stained glass or bare ground. Every tap plants a cell; the metal finds the new borders at once and swells where three cells meet. Give it a song and every cell listens to its own slice of the sound, from the deep bass to the bright top, rising and glowing when its notes play, while the beats ripple the web, plant new cells or flash the light. It runs on your graphics card, is free, needs no sign-in, and saves a PNG or a video with the song in it.

How to use it

  1. Tap the frame to plant a cell, drag one to pull the metal after it, double-tap one to melt it away; Scatter (S) throws a fresh set and Clear (C) leaves two.
  2. Choose the form (Enamel, Glass or Lace, F), the colours (P), the metal and its profile, then drop a song on the frame or press Add a song, or turn on the Mic (M), and set how much it reacts and what a beat does.
  3. Pick a frame shape (1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9) and press Picture (E) for a PNG or Take (T) for a video; with a song loaded, Take plays it from the start and stops at its end. Reset (R) starts over.

Make a visual for a track, a reel in 9:16, a looping backdrop for a talk or a stream, a pattern for a print, or a stained-glass window of your own layout.

Common questions

How does it move to my music?

Each cell is given its own slice of the sound on a log scale, from about 40 Hz to 12 kHz. When that slice is loud, the cell rises and glows. The bass thickens the metal, and a sudden jump in the bass counts as a beat, which can ripple the web, plant a cell or flash the light.

Is my song uploaded?

No. The song plays and is listened to inside your browser. The mic is only heard by the lace and is never recorded.

What does Take save?

A video of the frame at 60 frames a second, in the frame shape you chose. With a song loaded it records from the song's start to its end with the song in it; otherwise it records until you press Stop. Chrome and Safari save an MP4, other browsers a WebM.

How many cells can I plant?

Up to 64. When you plant one more, the oldest cell melts away.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap and drag on the frame; the frame carries its own buttons (pause, scatter, song, take and picture) and the panel opens as a sheet from the bottom.
