Color palette guide

Help

Short answers to what goes wrong most often.

Space does nothing

Space is left alone while a text field, button, link or section title has focus, so it presses that instead. Click an empty part of the page first.

In From image and Trending modes Space and Generate palette do nothing; pick a picture or a set instead.

Harmonious gives the same colours every time

That is how it works: the rule and the base colour decide every bar. Change the Base color or pick another rule for a new palette.

A locked colour changed

No mode changes a locked bar, trending sets included: they fill only the unlocked bars. Reset clears every lock, so the next palette changes all five.

My picture gave odd colours

The tool shrinks the picture to at most 100 pixels on its long side, reads every third pixel, and groups them into five averages. Small details can vanish into a bigger area, and a picture with few colours gives near-repeats.

Big pictures work the same way; only the shrunk copy is read.

The picture did not load

If a note says the file is not an image, or not one this browser can read, save it as a PNG or JPEG and try again.

My word made a neon palette

The tool knows only the eight words on the chips. Any other word, and an empty field, uses the Neon range.

Copy did nothing

Some browsers do not let a page write to the clipboard, and the note says Copy failed. Try another current browser, or read the hex codes off the bars.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Below 900 pixels wide the bars stack as rows. Tap a row to copy it and tap Lock to keep it. Space needs a keyboard, so use Generate palette. Nothing is capped on phones.

My palette is gone

The page keeps nothing when you reload or leave it, and Reset brings back the palette it opened with. Copy the palette before you go.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture is read on your device and never leaves it.

Why is a picture from another tool here?

Pictures you add are kept on this device for every lab tool that takes one, so you need not add them again. Press × on a tile to forget that picture; the palette the page arrived with comes back.
