Depth terrain guide
Keep your work
Everything is made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Every picture and file here is standard range (SDR); none is HDR.
| Button | What you get |
|---|---|
| Save PNG | The view as you see it, as terrain.png, at the size of the frame on your screen. |
| Copy | The same picture, on the clipboard, where the browser allows it. |
| Download OBJ | The land as a 3D mesh, as depth-terrain.obj: its points, their normals and its faces. It carries no colours and no picture. |
The files below need Map mode. In Photo mode, keep the PNG or the OBJ. The 16-bit files use the full bit depth a heightmap can hold.
Files for your game
In Map mode, the Files for your game section lists these cards. Each has its download buttons and a How to open it list.
The steps below assume the starting sea level of 25%. The panel rewrites them as you move Sea level.
Fortnite · Unreal · Minecraft
16-bit heightmap PNG. Sizes: 1009, 2017, 4033 px.
- Fortnite (UEFN): Landscape mode → Import from File → the 2017 PNG. UEFN caps a landscape at 2048 × 2048.
- Unreal Engine 5: Landscape mode → Import from File → any size. At Z Scale 100 the grey range spans 512 m and your shore sits at 25% grey — raise the landscape 128 m × Z Scale ÷ 100 to put the shore at zero.
- Minecraft (WorldPainter): import the PNG as a height map — 16-bit greyscale, no alpha. Put the water level at 25% of the height range.
Unity
16-bit RAW. Sizes: 1025, 2049, 4097 px.
- Terrain → Terrain Settings → Import Raw → the .raw file.
- Depth: Bit 16 · Byte Order: Windows · Flip Vertically: off, the file is already flipped for Unity · Resolution: the number in its name.
- Terrain Height sets the tallest point. The shore sits at 25% of it.
Roblox
Heightmap + colour map, as a ZIP. Sizes: 1024, 2048, 4096 px.
- Studio → Terrain Editor → Import → Heightmap: roblox-heightmap.png · Colormap: roblox-colormap.png.
- One pixel is 4 studs, so a 1024 map wants a region 4096 × 4096 studs wide.
- The region's height is the whole grey range, and the shore sits 25% of the way up. Sea and lakes import as water.
Paint layers
A grey mask per ground type, as a ZIP. Sizes: 1009, 2017, 4033 px.
- Unreal: Landscape → Paint → add a layer per ground type, right-click it → Import from file → its mask. Use the size of your heightmap.
- Anywhere else, white is where that ground is — a stencil for painting grass, rock or snow.
Blender · 3D apps
3D model with your map on it (GLB).
- Blender: File → Import → glTF 2.0 → terrain.glb. Your map comes in as its texture.
3D print
Closed solid (STL).
- Open terrain.stl in your slicer. It is a closed solid 150 mm across on a 2 mm base — scale it there.
Everything
All of the above, with these steps (ZIP).
- Heightmap 2017, Unity 2049, Roblox 1024, paint masks, GLB and STL, with a README holding every step.
