Liquid glass guide

Every control

Every control in the panel, top to bottom. Most sliders glide to a new value over a moment; Steps per frame and the Rain sliders change at once.

Load and save

They stay at the top while the panel scrolls. Your pictures stay on this device for every lab tool until you press × on a tile; Reset puts the controls back and leaves them.

Image AButton
Your picture. Press it to open one from your device, or drop one on the frame; two at once fill A and B. It is kept on this device, never uploaded, and every lab tool that takes a picture opens with it until you press × on its corner. A new picture starts with still water.
SwapButton
Changes which tile Liquid glass uses, so a picture you added as B in another tool can be used here. When the other tile is empty, the sample comes back.
Image BButton
A second kept picture. Liquid glass lays water over one picture at a time: the tile it is not using is dimmed and says Not used here, and pressing it only says so.
Save PNGButton
Saves the frame on screen as liquid-glass.png.
CopyButton
Copies the frame on screen to the clipboard. See clipboard.

Image

Here, a line shows the size of your picture and the size of the water simulation, which is at most 768 pixels on the long side.

Presets

A preset sets every slider in the panel and turns the rain on or off. It does not change the tint Color. No preset is marked when the page opens; the sliders then hold the Clear water values.

Clear water · Heavy rain · Frosted · Mercury · Crystal · Oil slick · Tsunami · Zen poolPick one
Starting points for the water. See preset.
  • Clear water: The values the page opens with: gentle rain, moderate bending and soft caustics.
  • Heavy rain: Many small drops at once, so the ripples cross each other. See heavy rain.
  • Frosted: A strong frosted grain, weak bending and a light tint. The rain is off, so tap or drag to make waves.
  • Mercury: Strong bending, bright caustics and sheen, big drops and slow waves that last a long time.
  • Crystal: Strong colour splitting and the brightest caustics, with fast waves and a little frost.
  • Oil slick: The strongest colour splitting, big slow drops, long-lasting waves, a tint and a little frost.
  • Tsunami: The strongest bending, the fastest waves and the biggest, hardest drops.
  • Zen pool: Few drops, gentle bending and slow waves that fade very slowly.

Refraction

StrengthSlider · 0 to 80 · starts at 30
How far the picture under the water is shifted where the surface tilts. At 0 the picture does not bend. See refraction strength.
DispersionSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.15
How much the red and blue parts bend apart, which draws coloured fringes along the waves. At 0 the colours stay together. See dispersion.
CausticsSlider · 0 to 2 · starts at 0.6
How strongly curved water brightens the picture in some places and darkens it in others. At 0 there are no bright lines. See caustics.
SpecularSlider · 0 to 1.5 · starts at 0.4
How bright the light shining off the wave slopes is, with a faint pale edge on steep slopes. At 0 there is none. See surface sheen.

Wave physics

SpeedSlider · 0.05 to 0.5 · starts at 0.2
How strongly each point of the water is pulled by its neighbours each step. Higher makes ripples travel faster. See wave speed.
DampingSlider · 0.95 to 0.999 · starts at 0.985
How much of its motion the water keeps each step. Closer to 1, waves last longer; lower, they settle sooner. See damping.
Steps per frameSlider · 1 to 8 · starts at 3
How many water steps run for each frame drawn. More makes the waves move further per frame, and is slower. See simulation steps.

Interaction

Drop radiusSlider · 0.01 to 0.08 · starts at 0.03
How wide the ripple is when you tap or drag, as a share of the picture's long side, so a ripple is round on a wide or tall picture too. Rain drops use their own sizes. See drop size.
Drop forceSlider · 0.05 to 1 · starts at 0.35
How hard your tap pushes the water. A drag pushes at half this strength. Rain drops use their own strength.

Rain

Rain onOn or off · starts on
Drops rain on the water at random places. See raindrop.
RateSlider · 1 to 30 · starts at 8
About how many rain drops fall each second.
Min sizeSlider · 0.003 to 0.04 · starts at 0.008
The smallest a rain drop can be, measured like Drop radius.
Max sizeSlider · 0.01 to 0.08 · starts at 0.035
The largest a rain drop can be, measured like Drop radius.

Glass tint

This section starts closed. Tap its title to open it.

ColorColour · starts #88ccff
The colour the tint shades the picture with.
AmountSlider · 0 to 0.5 · starts at 0
How strongly the picture is shaded with the tint colour. At 0 there is no tint. See tint.
FrostedSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0
A fine, still grain that scatters the picture a little at every pixel, like rough glass. At 0 there is none. See frosted glass.

Export

Clear wavesButton
Flattens the water at once. The settings and the picture stay. See clear waves.

Reset

ResetButton
Puts every setting back to how the page opened, the tint Color to light blue and the water to still.
