Painterly flow guide

Every control

Every control in the panel, top to bottom. The picture itself is a control too: while B paints in is on, as it is when the page opens, tap it to start a run.

Load and save

Under the tiles a line says what plays: the samples until you add your own, then A plays into B. Kept on this device, never uploaded. With B paints in off, it reads: Only picture A is used while B paints in is off. Your pictures follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture, until you press × on a tile.

Image AButton
Picture A as a tile: press it to add or replace your own; two pictures picked or dropped at once fill A and B. The × on a picture takes it away and the sample plays again. Your pictures stay on this device and follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture.
SwapButton
Exchanges A and B, so the transition plays the other way. With one picture of your own, it moves to the other side and the sample takes its place.
Image BButton
Picture B, the one A plays into, as a tile: press it to add or replace your own. The × takes it away and the sample returns. See PNG and JPEG.
Save PNGButton
Saves the frame as it is at that moment, as aikizi-painterly-flow.png. See PNG.
Record videoButton
Records the canvas for up to seven seconds, pressing Replay itself at the start. While recording it reads Stop recording; press it to stop early. See record video.
ReplayButton
Plays a run again at once, in the direction the next run would go. It does nothing while B paints in is off. See replay.

Effect

EffectChoice
Opens another of the 14 image transitions. Each one is its own page, so your pictures and settings stay behind.

Presets

Broad oil · Swirl comb · Palette knife · Gouache wash · Fibre stormPick one
Sets the render, every slider and the timing at once, with B paints in on; it does not start a run. The highlight goes as soon as you move a control.
  • Broad oil: The opening look: Oil, brush size 9, edge sharpness 10, flow coherence 2.2, paint amount 1, 2 seconds, ease in-out. Broad daubs with clean edges.
  • Swirl comb: Comb with long strokes and strong bristles: stroke length 3.6, bristle jitter 0.3, flow coherence 2.6, 2.4 seconds, strong ease in-out. See swirling strokes.
  • Palette knife: Oil with the biggest brush and the crispest edges: brush size 16, edge sharpness 16, flow coherence 3.4, 1.8 seconds, strong ease in-out. See palette knife and impasto.
  • Gouache wash: A soft, light touch: Oil, brush size 5, edge sharpness 4, flow coherence 1.4, paint amount 0.78, 2.2 seconds, ease out. See gouache.
  • Fibre storm: Comb with short, rough strokes that follow small detail: stroke length 1.6, bristle jitter 0.46, flow coherence 1, 1.6 seconds, expo out.

Sliders

The sliders change the frame on screen at once, and a run that is playing picks them up as it goes.

RenderChoice
How the paint is laid. Oil (Kuwahara) makes flat daubs and shows Brush size and Edge sharpness. Comb (LIC) makes streaks along the flow and shows Stroke length (0.5 to 6, how far each streak reaches) and Bristle jitter (0 to 0.5, how much neighbouring streaks differ in brightness) in their place. See stroke length and bristle jitter.
Brush sizeSlider · 2 to 18 · starts at 9
How big each daub is, in pixels of the working picture, which is 1280 pixels on its long side. Along a strong edge the daub stretches into an oval. See brush size and brush mark.
Edge sharpnessSlider · 1 to 18 · starts at 10
How strongly each pixel takes the calmest part of its daub. Low blends the parts into soft patches; high keeps the borders between patches crisp. See edge sharpness.
Flow coherenceSlider · 0.4 to 5 · starts at 2.2
How far the direction of the strokes is smoothed. Low follows every small detail; high makes strokes sweep along the big shapes. The directions are worked out again a moment after the slider stops moving. See flow coherence.
Paint amountSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 1
How much paint lies over the picture. At 0 you see the plain picture; at 1, only paint. See paint amount.
Transition speedSlider · 0.3 to 4 · starts at 2.3
How fast a run plays; right is faster. A run lasts 4 seconds at the left end and 0.3 seconds at the right. The number beside it compares with the opening look, Broad oil at 2 seconds, so it reads 1.00× at the start; 2.00× is twice as fast.
EasingChoice
How a run speeds up and slows down: Linear, three strengths each of ease in and ease out, two of ease in-out, expo out and back out. See easing, ease-in, ease-out, easing strength, expo out and back out.
B paints inOn or off · starts on
On, the picture rests painted and each run paints A into B: the painting of A crossfades into the painting of B, mixed about evenly halfway, where the brush is at its largest, and the next run goes back. Off, the tool is a still painting of picture A, and taps and Replay do nothing; turning it off returns to picture A. It starts on, and every preset and Reset keep it on. See paint in and crossfade midpoint.

Export

Under the buttons, a line tells you what the last export did, such as PNG saved.

Reset

Back to the Broad oil preset and the painting of picture A, with B paints in on. Your pictures stay.

ResetButton
Goes back to the Broad oil preset, with B paints in on, and returns to the painting of picture A, so the next run goes from A into B. Your pictures stay as they are.
