Portrait relight guide

Every control

Every control in the panel, top to bottom. The picture itself is a control too: tap it anywhere to start a run.

Load and save

Under the tiles a line says which pictures the look uses. As the page opens it reads: This look relights picture A only. Turn on A → B light-band wipe to play into B. Kept on this device, never uploaded. With the wipe on, it says what plays: the samples until you add your own, then A plays into B. Your pictures follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture, until you press × on a tile.

Image AButton
Picture A as a tile: press it to add or replace your own; two pictures picked or dropped at once fill A and B. The × on a picture takes it away and the sample plays again. Your pictures stay on this device and follow you to every lab tool that takes a picture.
SwapButton
Exchanges A and B, so the transition plays the other way. With one picture of your own, it moves to the other side and the sample takes its place.
Image BButton
Picture B, the one A plays into, as a tile: press it to add or replace your own. The × takes it away and the sample returns. See PNG and JPEG.
Save PNGButton
Saves the frame as it is at that moment, as aikizi-portrait-relight.png. See PNG.
Record videoButton
Records one run: it presses Replay itself and records the canvas for up to seven seconds. While recording it reads Stop recording; press it to stop early. See record video.
ReplayButton
Plays a run again at once, from the start of the light's turn. With the wipe on, it goes in the direction the next run would go. See replay.

Presets

Raking stone · Bronze idol · Moonlit · Hard key · Candle orbit · Sweep cutPick one
Sets every slider and the wipe switch at once; it does not start a run. The highlight goes as soon as you move a slider.
  • Raking stone: The opening look: a low light that grazes the picture, deep relief, a broad dull shine and half a turn of orbit, over 2.2 seconds. Relief depth 12, elevation 0.22, specular 0.3, shininess 8. See raking light.
  • Bronze idol: A tight, strong shine tinted by the picture's own colours, from a higher light that turns a quarter of the way round in 2 seconds. Metallic 0.85, specular 1.1, shininess 60. See bronze and metallic.
  • Moonlit: A soft light from high above, with little shine and plenty of fill, drifting a short way over 2.6 seconds with ease out. Elevation 1.15, relief depth 4.5, ambient fill 0.62. The colours stay the picture's own. See moonlight.
  • Hard key: A bright, small, sharp shine with dark shadows, and the quickest run: 1.1 seconds with expo out. Specular 1.5, shininess 120, ambient fill 0.22. See hard light.
  • Candle orbit: A low light that goes almost all the way round in 3 seconds, the slowest preset, with a tinted shine and generous fill. Orbit sweep 5.81, elevation 0.32, metallic 0.6. See candlelight.
  • Sweep cut: The only preset with the light-band wipe on: a run carries A into B in 1.6 seconds, relit as the light turns a quarter of the way round. See sweep cut and wipe.

Sliders

The sliders change the next run, and the frame on screen at once when no run is playing. The two angles and Orbit sweep are in radians: 3.14 is half a turn, 6.28 a whole one.

Sweep speedSlider · 0.3 to 4 · starts at 2.1
How fast a run plays; right is faster. A run lasts 4 seconds at the left end and 0.3 seconds at the right. The number beside it compares with the opening look, Raking stone at 2.2 seconds, so it reads 1.00× at the start; 2.00× is twice as fast.
Relief depthSlider · 0 to 24 · starts at 12
How strongly the brightness changes tilt the surface. At 0 the picture is flat and lit evenly; higher, fine detail stands out as if embossed. See relief depth and normal map.
Key azimuthSlider · 0 to 6.283185307179586 · starts at 0.2
Where the light starts, round the picture. At 0 it comes from the right; higher values turn it clockwise, through the bottom. See key azimuth.
Key elevationSlider · 0.05 to 1.5 · starts at 0.22
How high the light stands above the picture. Low values skim the surface and bring out every bump; near the top the light falls from almost straight in front. See key elevation and raking light.
SpecularSlider · 0 to 2 · starts at 0.3
How bright the shine is where the surface faces the light and you at once. At 0 there is no shine. See specular highlight.
ShininessSlider · 1 to 160 · starts at 8
How small and sharp that shine is. Low values spread it wide and soft; high values make a tight, glinting spot. See shininess.
Ambient fillSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0.4
A floor of light added everywhere, so the side away from the light never drops to black. At 0 the shadows go fully dark. See ambient fill and fill light.
MetallicSlider · 0 to 1 · starts at 0
The colour of the shine. At 0 it is white; at 1 it takes the picture's own colour, as metal does. See metallic.
Orbit sweepSlider · 0 to 6.283185307179586 · starts at 3.14
How far the light turns round the picture during a run, from 0, which does not move it, to 6.28, a whole turn. A run ends with the light at the starting angle plus this. See orbit sweep.
EasingChoice
How a run speeds up and slows down: Linear, three strengths each of ease in and ease out, two of ease in-out, expo out and back out. See easing, ease-in, ease-out, easing strength, expo out and back out.
A → B light-band wipeOn or off · starts off
Off, a run relights picture A and stops with the light at the end of its turn; turning the wipe off returns to picture A. On, a run is a wipe: a band of light crosses the frame towards the light and leaves the other picture behind it, and the next run goes back. See sweep cut.
