Looking and time

Where you stand, when you are, and how to find your way back: the views, the camera, the clock, the dice and your history.

Moving the camera

right-dragTurn around the rug. On a trackpad, hold ⌥ and drag.
⇧-dragSlide the camera sideways or forward. A middle-button drag does the same.
scrollCome closer or step back. On a trackpad, scroll with two fingers.
HHide the panel to give the rug more room.
FOnly the rug. Press again, or esc, to bring everything back.
MThe camera films the rug by itself. Turning, sliding, scrolling or a view takes it back.

Left-drag always belongs to your hand, so the camera never moves by accident while you comb.

The camera filmsM, or film in the bottom bar.

Turn on film and the camera moves by itself: the whole rug, in toward the field, low along the pile, a corner and its fringe, down over the motif, the far border.

Its shots run on the weather’s own clock. A 6-second loop holds two of them, 12 seconds three, 20 seconds five and 40 seconds all six, and after one loop the camera is back where it began, so a seamless loop closes on the camera too.

Soft focus keeps each shot’s subject sharp while what lies before and behind it softens. Turn or slide the camera, scroll, or pick a view, and film stops; press M to hand the camera back.

Time

The weather is a loop. It runs for a set time, then comes back to exactly where it started.

The clock in the bottom bar shows where you are in the loop, for example 02.6 / 20 s. Choose 6, 12, 20 or 40 seconds under loop in the wind tab; tempo beside it sets how much the weather does inside one loop.

Press space to pause. The weather holds still, but the pile keeps answering your hand, and settles for a moment after you let go. While paused, → steps a tenth of a second forward.

While paused, light and colour changes show at once, but changes to how the pile moves appear only when it moves again: during a stroke, after a mood or the dice, or when you press →.

The diceIn the bottom bar, or R N W.

rerollThe same kind of motif, drawn again from a new seed. Everything else stays, even your marks.
nudgeMoves three to five numbers a little (wind, pile, light, motif size or border), and now and then picks a new seed. Good for finding a nearby variation.
wildA new rug from a random mood: motif, colours, weave, pile, wind and light all change. The rug’s shape, your words and your marks stay.

Every roll lands in your history, so nothing is lost by trying.

History and stars

Each look you settle on appears as a small picture in the bottom-right strip. Click one to go back to it, with your hand’s marks as they were. ⌘ Z and ⌘ ⇧ Z step back and forward through the same list once there are no strokes left to undo.

The strip keeps the last 120 looks. When it fills, the oldest ones without a star make room.

Press S to star a look. Up to 60 starred looks, with their marks, are kept in your browser and are still there the next time you open Woven Wind. Looks without a star last only until you close the page.

Sharing a look

A moment after you change anything, the address in your browser’s address bar is updated to hold the whole setting. Copy it to bookmark a look or send it to someone.

Two things stay on your own computer and do not travel in the address: a picture you dropped in as the cloth, and the marks your hand made.

Opening Woven Wind again without such an address brings back the last look you had.
