Noise & texture guide
Help
Short answers to what goes wrong most often.
Does it need WebGL or a GPU?
No. Every pixel is worked out in JavaScript and drawn on a plain canvas. Any current browser works.
It is slow
The picture is drawn by your processor, one pixel at a time. Pick 256 under Output, or lower Octaves. Erosion is the slowest type. Sliders glide to their new value and redraw as they go, so let go and wait a moment.
I can see a join when the texture repeats
Turn on Seamless tiling, then check Tile preview. The edges match on a square picture; with your own image laid over it, they may not.
Warp does nothing
Warp X and Warp Y are not used while Seamless tiling is on. Turn it off to see them.
Octaves or Persistence does nothing
Some types do not stack layers: Voronoi edge, Curl, Caustics, Plasma, Stucco, Film grain and Scratches. Cloud keeps its own persistence. Try Perlin to see these sliders at work.
I picked 1024 but the picture is 512
If the page opened on a phone, a touch screen or a window under 900 pixels wide, it draws at 512 at most. Reload the page after widening the window. The line under the Noise sliders shows the size that was drawn.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap to pick a noise type, a preset or a colour mode. Every type, preset and export is there; the largest size is 512.
Copy did nothing
Some browsers do not let a page put a picture on the clipboard. Use Download PNG instead.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is read and mixed on your device and never leaves it.
Why is a picture from another tool here?
Pictures you add are kept on this device for every lab tool that takes one, so you need not add them again. Press × on a tile to forget that picture; the noise is shown alone.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
The tool has none of its own. Anywhere in the lab, Ctrl K, or Cmd K on a Mac, opens the list of all tools.
Why does the video stop by itself?
Record video keeps exactly one sweep, Seconds a cycle long, so the clip loops when it plays. It is an MP4 in H.264, the kind phones, Photos and Instagram play.
