A shape has symmetry when you can change it and it still looks the same. A butterfly has mirror symmetry: fold it down the middle and the halves match. A starfish has turning symmetry: rotate it a fifth of a turn and nothing seems to move. A tiled floor has sliding symmetry, repeating as you move along. Pattern tools make a small piece and copy it by these rules.
