How to Analyze Composition, Lighting, Color, and Materials

A four-lens framework for reading any image clearly—from spatial structure and light direction to palette roles and surface behavior.

The four-lens method

Read images in this order: composition → lighting → color → materials. Structure tells you where to look, light explains volume, color organizes emotion and hierarchy, and materials reveal how surfaces respond.

Visual analysis becomes easier when you stop trying to describe everything at once. Four passes are usually enough. Each pass answers a different kind of question, and together they create a precise brief for critique, art direction, or prompt writing.

1. Composition: map the visual skeleton

Begin with the largest shapes. Squint or view the image as a thumbnail. Where are the dominant light and dark masses? Which edge contains the most visual weight? Where does the eye enter, pause, and exit?

  • Frame: close-up, medium, wide, panoramic, vertical, square.
  • Viewpoint: eye level, low angle, high angle, overhead, oblique.
  • Placement: centered, rule of thirds, diagonal, radial, intentionally unbalanced.
  • Depth: foreground frame, middle-distance subject, background destination.
  • Scale: what object tells us how large the world is?
  • Negative space: where does the image breathe, threaten, or create anticipation?

If every object became a flat black cutout, would the composition still work? If yes, the image has a strong skeleton.

2. Lighting: trace source, direction, and quality

“Dramatic lighting” is a reaction, not an analysis. Locate the source. Follow highlight edges and cast shadows. Then describe the light with operational terms.

Where does it come from?

Sun, sky, window, lamp, screen, flame, emission, reflected ground, or an intentionally impossible source.

Quality

How does it fall?

Hard or soft, broad or focused, frontal or raking, even or broken, warm or cool, clean or hazy.

Ratio

How deep are shadows?

High-key images keep values close. Low-key images let darkness dominate. Contrast ratio shapes mood and legibility.

Function

What does it accomplish?

Separate silhouette, reveal texture, hide information, direct attention, flatten space, or create a sacred glow.

3. Color: assign roles, not just HEX codes

A palette is a hierarchy. Start with the dominant field, then the supporting family, accent, darkest anchor, and lightest highlight. Record the balance: 60/30/10 is a useful shorthand, though real images often use subtler ratios.

  • Temperature: warm-dominant, cool-dominant, or deliberately split?
  • Saturation: muted overall with one saturated accent, or uniformly intense?
  • Value: compressed and misty, or broad from deep black to bright white?
  • Harmony: analogous, complementary, triadic, split complementary, or near-monochrome?
  • Behavior: local color, colored light, reflective color, symbolic color, or material color?

4. Materials: predict the surface response

Materials are not adjectives added at the end. They determine highlight size, edge sharpness, reflection, translucency, texture scale, and how objects age.
