Alpha
A fourth channel beside red, green and blue that says how see-through a pixel is.
See it in Pixel art editor. Set Background to Transparent, draw something, then save a PNG.
In plain words
A pixel can carry a fourth number beside red, green and blue. That number, alpha, says how see-through the pixel is. At full alpha the colour covers whatever is behind it. At zero the pixel cannot be seen, and in between the two colours mix. Apps show see-through areas as a grey checkerboard. PNG and WebM files keep alpha, but JPEG does not.
