Luminance
The brightness a colour gives off, weighted as eyes see it: green counts most, blue least.
See it in Color intelligence. Load a picture and turn on Show luminance.
In plain words
A screen makes every colour from red, green and blue light. Your eyes do not treat the three the same. Full green looks far brighter than full blue, and red sits in between. Luminance adds the three with those weights: about 21 parts red, 72 parts green and 7 parts blue. The result is one number for how bright a colour really looks. Tools use it to turn pictures grey, choose ASCII characters and check text contrast.
