In plain words
A vector is a short list of numbers that together mean one thing. On a flat picture it is two numbers, x and y, often drawn as an arrow. The arrow's length and direction carry the meaning, such as a push, a speed or a place. Adding two vectors puts their arrows tip to tail. Graphics code uses vectors for positions, colours, light directions and motion.
